More than 600 historic sites in London are at risk of being lost says Historic England

More than 600 heritage sites across London at risk of being lost through neglect, decay or deterioration according to Historic England.

The annual Heritage at Risk Register includes places of worship, parks and garden.

According to Historic England, the aim of the Heritage at Risk Register is to increase awareness and focus attention on those places in greatest need.

“Our role is to really highlight the situation through our publications, to get the local authority involved and to encourage all parties to talk to each other,” said Ian Harper, an architect from Historic England.

“We encourage the local authority to use all of their powers at their disposable to ensure that buildings are kept in good condition.”

Last year £1.5m was spent on at-risk sites in London and the South East.

One of the heritage sites in need of repair is Christ Apostolic Church in Hackney.

The church has been categorised by Historic England as Priority A, in immediate risk of further rapid deterioration.

Christ Apostolic Church in Hackney is just one of more than 600 heritage sites across London at risk of being lost through neglect, decay or deterioration.

“The Heritage At Risk Register creates awareness for something to be done but…it costs so much to do the repairs there is struggle to get the finances required to do the work,” Church Minister in Charge, Prophetess Fadeke Omideyi said.

However, Church Secretary Kunle Aderugdo does not think enough is being done to protect historic sites: “I don’t think there is enough support for people that run and occupy historic buildings.

“These buildings are really about heritage, heritage from the past and heritage moving forward. There needs to be going forward a grassroots mechanism that helps with regards to how funding is obtained and what type of funding is available.”
